As a child, Star Wars served as an ersatz-spiritual force. It wasn’t religion, it wasn’t a true calling, but between multiple viewings of the original series on 80s era VHS recordings and stacks of expanded universe books, it spoke to me. It spoke of a certain ability to look beyond the crude matter of the world and explore the forces behind it: The world had something beyond it, that both surrounded it and penetrated it.
