A Poor Man's Offering
Tech Tribe Dispatch #344
💡 Think:
“If a person [Lit. “a soul”] brings an unspecified grain-offering to G-d...
—Leviticus 2:1
Sacrifice is at the heart of Judaism. Our prayers are based on the daily sacrifices of the Holy Temple. Our synagogues and Shabbat tables are modeled on the tabernacle…
But what does G-d want from sacrifices? Surely not a lamb-burger or pigeon blood.
The act of drawing closer to G-d (for the Hebrew word for sacrifice, karbon, connotes drawing close) is to burn our pasions and desires on the transcendent alter.
A rich person brings a fatty bull, but a poor person, need only bring grain flour.
As Rashi notes on the grain sacrifice of a pauper, “The term nefesh is not mentioned regarding any of the other voluntary offerings except with the grain-offering, for the following reason: Who typically donates a grain-offering? A poor man. The Holy One, blessed be He, says: I regard him as if he brought his very soul, nefesh, before Me.
We bring our utmost, based on our abilities, and to G-d, that is most precious.
