💡 Think:
Perhaps the worst part of the American Jewish experience is how often people associate Judaism with the negative.
What’s being Jewish?
Back Aches
Holocaust
Don’t do this
… and don’t do that
Fasting
Eating because they tried to kill us
Stomach Issues
Allergies
Kvetching
Pogroms
Oy!
I mean, at least we’ve got bagels.
In reality, Judaism is a deeply joyous experience. The current month, the month of Adar, is one of continuous build up of joy - from the first day to the last. Indeed this year, a leap year, has two Adars, and with them, 60 days of joy!
And that brings us to today, Purim Katan, the small Purim… Since the month of Adar is doubled, with it is the celebration of Purim… and thus the ‘smaller celebration’ of Purim today.
(Check back next month, for our EPIC Purim Brooklyn House Party!)
The laws of Purim Katan are discussed at the very end of Orach Chaim, the rules that govern the daily and yearly cycle of Jewish life - bringing the cycle to an end on the high note of joy…
Purim Katan isn’t like Simchat Torah - the joyous holiday when we dance with the Torah… But there are limits on Simchat Torah. It’s a holiday where we must be higher, more sanctified, and thus can not perform melacha. On Purim proper, there are also restraints - our rejoicing my be modulated by the demands of the day.
But Purim Katan is a mundane day. There are no unique mitzvot. It’s just… a day.
And we REJOICE! Because today is the day that gives us the power to experience the true Jewish joy — where we celebrate in even the most mundane moments.
