A pair of rabbinical students was traveling across America in the 1940s. They met an older Jewish gentleman in the Midwest, spoke to him, helped him put on Tefillin and then bid him farewell.
“May I asked you a question?” the older gentleman said. “Many rabbis come and visit me, and when they leave they always ask for a check. I know it’s the real reason they came, and I’m happy to oblige. Why is it that you two only seemed interested in helping me with the mitzvos?”
“Well,” one of the students said, “If you recall in the shtetls of old in Europe, every town had a Torah scroll, but not every town had a scribe. Just as itinerant scribes would travel from town to town to repair the scrolls, inking in the cracked letters, we travel from person to person to help them with mitzvos - after all, isn’t every Jew a Torah scroll?”
They bid the gentleman farewell once more and in due time returned to New York.
Speaking to the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, they told him of the exchange.
“I have one correction,” the rebbe said,
“The letters of the Torah scroll can crack, but the words engraved in the souls of every Jew can never crack or fade. Like the letters of the Ten Commandments, our bond to our Creator is truly one with us - engraved in our souls. We need only shake off the dust.”
