💡 Think:
Times online feel particularly fraught… The Jews seem to have trended every day of the week… And Elon’s rapid and tumultuous takeover has made every tweet feel like it’s taking place at a party at the end of the universe. (Read: Can Jack, Elon and the Bird App Help Us Understand The Divine Secret of Creation?)
How can we hope to make an impact, add some light in the chaotic darkness?
In 1986 the Rebbe shared an interesting personal anecdote. A woman had received a chain-letter, with frightening predictions for the one who would dare to break the chain. Fearful for her future, she wrote to the Rebbe, asking him what to do.
After reassuring the lady that she had nothing to worry, that such baseless fears had no place for a Jew, he asked aloud,
”I wondered, what exactly was the lesson I could learn from this letter?”
So the Rebbe suggested something novel:
If a negative letter could reach so many people, then now was the chance to do something positive: People could share two classic rabbinic sources that highlighted our power to create, to demand, transformative goodness in this world, in a way that does not push it off for some unknown future, but demands it now, immanently and in our lives.
These sources could be mailed to 10 people (No need to be peak-Chabad and do more than that, he noted) encouraging them to share goodness with ten more people in turn.
We can create a “chain reaction” of good… From letters, to this email, to Twitter and beyond.
