💡 Think:
It is written: They shall make Me a sanctuary and I shall dwell within them.
“Within them,” and not within it - the sanctuary - means within every one of Israel. For within every Jew, the core point of the heart’s inner essence is a sanctuary for G-d’s dwelling (may He be blessed).
Thus, just as the the site of the sanctuary in Jerusalem remains sacred, even in times of exile and desolation. As the sages said: “The Divine Presence (Shechina) never departs from the Western Wall.” All the desolation from the destruction of the Holy Temple and its sanctuary is limited to the buildings.
So, too then, the inner personal sanctuary within each of us - that deep spot where G-d is always found; the foundation is whole, clear and pure, as it is written in the Song of Songs, “I am asleep but my heart is alert.”
The Midrash comments that this verse is the call of every Jewish person: “I may be asleep for mitzvot, but my heart is alert for acts of kindness; I am asleep for charitable acts, but my heart is alert to perform them.”
Any sense of spiritual desolation someone may claim they see in the people Israel is only superficial. The foundation of the individual sanctuary, however, remains in its holy state.
