💡 Think:
Last week we highlighted the message from the first half of the two-part Torah Portion, Vayakhel, ant its message for start-ups: In order to make sure what we create —be it an actual start-up, our personal projects or our relationships— is truly transformative, we need to center the ‘big picture’ look in everything.
It was an oft quoted idea —and ultimately a meme— of the Halcyon days of the Aughts and 2010’s, that tech, somehow, whatever the product was, would make the world a better place.
But with the techno-dystopian attitude of the post-2016 world, the world has since comfortably settled on a more cynical, if realistic, view of tech.
And they’re not wrong… Scalable fault-tolerant distributable databases with ACID transactions are a long way from making the world a better place.
But I do believe that tech, at its core, is redemptive… that it CAN make the world a better place - when focused and harnessed in the right way.
But how do you do that?
Enter this week’s Torah Portion, the second half of the duo, Pekudei.
Pekudei is the detailed breakdown of every facit in building the tabernacle, in constructing the physical space where G-dliness is revealed.
If last week we were exhorted to have a big picture approach - to create the broad expansive vision for how we’ll transform the world in all of its complexity, this week is the call to check every detail of what we do against that vision.
As we create, as we move fast, we need to make sure that each part passes a test - checking with that grand transformative Vayakhel vision - so that the vision is revealed in each detail. Look at each point, at what you do… and ask yourself: Is this helping me move forward in my vision to transform this world?
