💡 Think:
Rabbi Israel Hopshtein, the Magid of Kozhnitz, once asked a certain rich man what he usually ate each day. The rich man, eager to show his piety to the famed rabbi, detailed his ascetic lifestyle. From Sunday to Friday he fasted daily, he told the rabbi, eating only bread with salt and some water each night.
Instead of praise for his pious ways, he was surprised when the Magid scolded him.
"Fool," said the Magid. "Go home and eat meat and other delicacies. Drink aged wine!"
When they had left the rich man, the Magid's disciples asked why he said that. After all, shouldn't everyone abstain from excess? What place does someone with wealth have, say, drinking a $13,000 dollar bottle of Cabernet?
"If the rich man dines on meat and wine, then he would at least feel that the paupers in his town should be given bread and salt,” the Magid of Kozhnitz explained. “But if he himself subsists on dry bread and salt, he might think that poor people could live on stones..."
