💡 Think:
This week’s Torah portion lists the unique census method G-d commands Moses to use when counting the Jews.
“This they shall give, everyone who goes through the counting: half a shekel according to the holy shekel… The rich shall give no more, and the poor shall give no less than half a shekel.”1
There is something intriguing about the Torah’s formulation of giving:
On one hand, the gift must be given as a half shekel, a half measure - incomplete.
On the other hand it needs to be a complete, singular gift, one gift from each person.
Half and whole.
When we understand that we are incomplete, that we need a second half — our soul’s connection to G-d, our individual connection to the community, our help for those who are in need — we become truly whole.
By embracing our need for reciprocity and completion with those around us, we are one.
