Spiritual Nuclear Chanukah!

Earlier this month, Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved nuclear “fusion ignition” in a controlled setting for the first time on Earth.
An atom, in its infinitesimally quantity1, contains within it immense power. It can be used to reap utter destruction - leveling cities and corrupting organic life - or it can channeled for something higher.
Perhaps, not unlike the small jug of oil, that could be used to kindle light beyond earthly constraints, we can tap into the spark within us - the jar of oil, the fused atom - that can be used to illuminate the world.
There’s something more though. Plumbing the depths of the very core of the physical universe, fusing, uniting, two of the most basic building blocks of reality to unleash energy, is not just a lesson in our own potential, but an act of revealing the very One behind all being.
In a talk from October 19762, the Rebbe noted how the search for the unified field theory, the lessons of the atomic age, could reveal the G-dliness within every thing:
“Since the true existence of the world is G‑d’s profound Oneness, it follows that such oneness is reflected in the existence of the world itself; i.e., the inner dimension of the world itself is characterized by oneness.
This concept – that the unity that pervades the world, which from the standpoint of its inner dimension, is a reflection of G‑d’s profound Oneness – is being progressively revealed to an ever greater extent as secular knowledge develops and flourishes.
In the not-so-distant past it was believed that each of the world’s “natural forces” is an independent entity unto itself and that all physical matter is made up of various discrete elements. However, with the progressive development of secular knowledge, there has been a realization that the multiplicity and diverseness among the elements are only external. As one becomes increasingly aware of the manner in which these seemingly discrete elements combine and how they contract and expand, a person comes to appreciate that the existence of the world and all it contains constitutes a dynamic unity between two components: mass and energy.”
Like the interplay between body and soul, the physical and the divine, even these two essential forces are ultimately expressions of the true and only unity within all things —G-d’s very essence — is felt and revealed within all things.
