💡 Think:
There are four ways we observe Purim: We listen to the megillah (At night and again during the day), give gifts of food to friends, charity to the poor and enjoy a festive meal.
Of the first and the last observance, recounting the story and sharing a feast, their connection to Purim seems logical. But what connection do gifts of food and charity have specifically to the holiday?
We can take a step back and looking at the deeper tensions of the day. Purim is the day that the Jewish people recommitted themselves to the Torah. If at Sinai, they were so overawed by the spiritual grandeur of the moment, but they could not help but accept the Torah.
On Purim, the situation was reversed, facing annihilation, exiled from the Holy Land and at the nadir of the Jewish experience, the Jews nevertheless still dedicated themselves to the Torah. This (re)dedication was accomplished through the unity of the Jewish people.
Thus the mitzvos of Purim are ones that focus on the unity we share, the gifts we send to our friends, the gifts we give to the poor.
May we celebrate Purim with joy ahead!1
There are many great causes to support this Purim. We’re giving to the Jewish Relief Network Ukraine.
