💡 Think:
The entire year in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Kohanim —the priestly class serving in the Temple— would pour wine on the alter. Wine has a richness of taste, complexity and depth. It represents a deep intellectual connection to Judaism and to G-d - but one in which the full sense of self is felt.
On Sukkot the ritual would change, water was poured on the alter instead of wine. Water has no flavor, no complexity, yet its life-giving power is one far deeper than wine. It’s a sense of pure appreciation and joy without the outward sense of self interfering.
On Shemini Atzeret, the holiday of Simchat Torah tonight, we return to the wine libations on the alter. We’ve earned the richness and depth the Holy one can bestow upon us.
On Sukkot we buy a proverbial drink for G-d - we set aside ourself for Him… So that he buys a round for all of us to enrich our year with joy from Simchat Torah and on.1
