💡 Think:
The Talmud relates1:
Rabbi Abba said that Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: Two Torah scholars who listen to each other in the discussion of halakha, the Holy One, Blessed be He, hears their voice, as it is stated: “You who dwell in gardens, the companions heed your voice, cause me to hear it”
Why is it that a human court is considered so special that G-d, with the entire heavenly entourage, comes to listen to them?
The reason explained in Chasidic sources2 is that the frailty of the human process is the very reason the resulting decision is so precious.
The halachic decision could be rendered any number of ways, depending on how various factors are weighed and considered, various doubts investigated and explore.
As such the court must grapple with these doubts, with the very possibility of erring and ruling incorrectly, to determine the final result.
The resulting decision that arises from the human process, that envelops and uplifts that humanity, is one that shines forth like the clarity of light appreciated in darkness.
